One of you hosts and sends the case link (or reads the case number over FaceTime). The other taps the link. Both screens then build the same hidden case while keeping each detective's clues private. Nothing is shared between the two screens during play, so it works on hotel Wi-Fi once the page has loaded.
The host is always Detective 1. Choose both guest detectives, then generate the case.
Tap the link your partner sent, or enter the case number here. You will be Detective 2.
The case number carries the engine version, the story seed and the detective pairing.
Ryo Sato is the homicide detective first assigned to Hiro Watanabe's death. Methodical, calm under pressure, and famously willing to use unconventional resources, he has crossed paths with each of tonight's guest investigators on earlier cases. With six suspects still inside Kuro Neko and the crime scene already compromised by a moved body, he reluctantly accepts two extra sets of eyes.
“You can help. But you follow my rules, and you tell me what you find.”
Six people remained inside Kuro Neko. One of them killed Hiro.
Kuro Neko’s renowned head chef. Trained in Tokyo, Kenji built the restaurant’s reputation for exacting omakase. Brilliant, demanding, and fiercely protective of his craft, he has clashed with Hiro over costs, menu changes, and control of the kitchen.
EmployeeKitchen accessMika runs Kuro Neko’s sake and cocktail program with creativity and attitude. Guests confide in her, staff trust her, and she hears nearly everything that happens after dark. She has been pushing for a larger role in the restaurant.
EmployeeBar accessA meticulous city health inspector with the authority to make a restaurant owner’s life miserable. Marcus insists he is simply thorough. Hiro has accused him of enjoying the leverage his badge gives him a little too much.
ProfessionalPrep/storage accessA high-profile critic whose reviews can fill a dining room—or empty one. Elise and Hiro have history after a particularly brutal review and an equally public response. She arrived tonight for an exclusive tasting.
Professional customerInfluentialJamal is Kuro Neko’s regular supplier of fish and specialty ingredients. Friendly and dependable, he knows the receiving areas as well as the staff. Lately, payment disputes and quality accusations have strained his relationship with Hiro.
SupplierReceiving accessA successful investor and long-time Kuro Neko regular. Victoria books the VIP booth, spends generously, and expects special treatment. Her relationship with Hiro extends well beyond an ordinary reservation.
Regular customerVIP accessHiro built Kuro Neko from a tiny sushi counter into one of the city’s most coveted reservations. Charming with guests and ruthless in business, he knew everyone’s secrets—and had accumulated more than a few of his own.
“Excellence is everything.”
These are the tensions everyone knows about. Other relationships and secrets may surface only through the investigation.
The Courtyard is where Hiro's body was found. It is never the true murder scene. Two corridors reach it: the service corridor from the Kitchen, Fish Market and Walk-In Freezer, and the guest corridor from the Sushi Bar, VIP Booth and Sake Cellar stairs. A drainage pipe hangs across both corridors at 5′9″.
Three forensic families. Sato's coroner will rule one family out after your fourth clue. Knowing the family does not tell you which of the two weapons was used.
Solve who killed Hiro, what weapon was used, and where the murder actually happened. Your partner holds the other half of the evidence — and may lie about it.
On your turn, privately reveal your next clue. Each clue features one suspect. You get 12; your partner gets a different 12.
Each clue has a truthful version and one alternate version that changes a single fact. Lock in the one you will tell. You may lie about each suspect only once, so at most 6 lies.
Read the highlighted evidence aloud, word for word. The scene around it is yours to paraphrase or skip. Look at the camera.
Your partner says “Accept” (you may eat a normal piece of sushi) or “Challenge.” You record either one on your screen.
Caught lying? Read the truthful version aloud, then eat sushi with wasabi or take a sip of sake. Challenged while truthful? Your partner pays instead. Each player gets 5 challenges for the whole game; the speaker's screen keeps the count.
After clues 4 and 8, Sato shares a public fact with both of you. Nobody can lie about a briefing.
From round 6 on, say “I accuse” aloud, then name the suspect, weapon and room. 3 accusations per game. Wrong? Wasabi, and wait one clue. First correct accusation wins.
Alternate turns: host, partner, host… At rounds 4, 8 and 12 say your round number and remaining challenges aloud so both screens agree.
Briefings appear once a case is loaded, and after your 4th and 8th clues.
Only your detective's clues appear here. Reveal one scene, lock TRUTH or LIE, read the highlighted evidence aloud, then record whether your partner accepted or challenged.
Host or join a case first.
Tap once to mark “maybe”, twice to cross out, three times to clear. Notes stay on this device.
Load a case to track when a formal accusation becomes available.
After both detectives finish their 12th clue, or as soon as someone accuses correctly, Sato gathers everyone at the bar. Reveal one suspect at a time and take turns reading Sato's lines.
